IN THIS ISSUE:

LETTER FROM THE CEO

It’s a new year for SPLC and I am excited for the opportunity to lead the organization during this pivotal time for our field. As our understanding of the massive issues that face us —climate change, economic inequality and corruption, accelerating consumption of finite resources—grows, our collective work to engage leaders and demonstrate the value of smart sustainable procurement decisions matters more than ever before.

I believe the SPLC has the potential to lead the way to the prosperous and healthy future we all want for ourselves and our children. And I bring many years’ experience – as a supplier diversity, CSR and responsible supply chain lead at Mars, Wrigley, Avon, and Bristol Meyers Squibb, and as a service provider at Verisk-Maplecroft – to help lead the organization into a new era of visibility and influence.

I look forward to meeting all of you in Atlanta this May18-20 at the SPLC’s annual Summit + Connect – the leading conference for sustainable purchasing professionals to come together, learn from each other, recommit to our goals, and report on our collective impact. In the meantime, please consider my virtual ‘door’ always open to members, thought leaders and allies for discussion of how we can move faster and more impactfully through collaboration and partnership.

Sustainable Procurement News

In January SPLC Member Microsoft announced its plan to be carbon negative by 2030 and remove its historical carbon emissions by 2050. Speaking in a recent CDP report on supply chain emissions, Lucas Joppa, Chief Environmental Officer at Microsoft, says, “The best time to act on climate change was yesterday, so we better start today.” Microsoft’s procurement and supply chain teams are critically involved in supporting and moving ahead on this audacious, ambitious and trend-setting goal.
