Carbon footprints are measured in ‘metric tons of CO2 equivalent’. Waste is measured in ‘tons to landfill’. Water in ‘gallons used’ or ‘gallons discharged’. Fair trade in ‘wages paid’. But what’s the metric for sustainable purchasing? We don’t have one that’s widely accepted – and that’s a gap for our movement. If we can’t track progress we can’t manage towards our desired outcomes.
In this session, two of the early leaders of SPLC, Christina Macken (Director of Programs) and Yalmaz Siddiqui (Founding Board Chair) will share some differing views on this critical question and lead an interactive discussion on the question ‘what’s the metric for our movement’. The goal of the session is to get closer to one, or a small set of metrics, that sustainable purchasing practitioners can agree to pursue.
