The Green Electronics Council (GEC) recognizes the environmental benefits associated with cloud computing and aims to assist large scale purchasers to make the transition to cloud services. Several industry sponsored studies have found that cloud computing can be as much as 87% more energy efficient than traditional owned data centers. Large scale purchasers can benefit from a credible and easily understandable way to calculate the sustainability gains of cloud computing. The GEC Sustainability Through Cloud Computing Initiative is aggregating existing metrics to develop a purchaser focused cloud computing guide and benefits calculation. Through this workshop, purchasers will understand the sustainability benefits associated with cloud computing, learn about BSR’s Corporate Colocation and Cloud Buyers’ Principles, and engage on what questions to ask of cloud computing service providers to get the necessary data to complete a sustainability benefits calculation.
