Special Presentation: The Vision for a Major New SPLC Program

Have you ever felt one of these sentiments or heard a purchaser express it?

  • “Where can I find the list of eco-labels and standards SPLC recommends?”
  • “How can I make it easier for my staff to track ‘sustainable spend’?”
  • “How can I get my eProcurement catalog provider to label ‘sustainable’ products in a credible way?”
  • “I don’t trust any eco-labels or standards anymore, so don’t use them.”
  • “We would really like to be using more third party verified product claims, like certifications and standards, but there are too many to evaluate.”
  • “We have to have it in policy before we can prefer a label or standard. But it’s risky naming individual labels or standards in policies that don’t change as fast as the market, so we don’t.”

We hear these sentiments a lot. That’s why SPLC staff – with input from a number of our most engaged members – have been developing a major new program area related to sustainability labels, certifications, and standards. We think it can answer many of those questions, and finally resolve some of the thorniest challenges sustainable purchasing programs encounter. We are looking forward to sharing our vision for this new program with you at the Summit and hearing what you think!
