SPLC BENCHMARK in Practice: Insights from State of California’s Experience

Rock Island

Since the Fall of 2017, the State of California has used the SPLC BENCHMARK platform in two pioneering ways:  by evaluating the maturity of its state-level sustainable purchasing efforts against those of other states;  and by evaluating the maturity of multiple agency-level sustainable purchasing efforts within the state.   Both efforts were facilitated via the SPLC BENCHMARK Cohort Program hosted by SPLC and sponsored by the National Association for State Procurement Officers (NASPO).  In this session, the results from both efforts will be presented along with valuable insights gained and lessons learned, including how participants leveraged SPLC BENCHMARK to spark innovation, understand strategies for improvements, identifying new alignment opportunities along the way.  This will be an excellent session for anyone interested in using SPLC BENCHMARK to compare indirect and/or direct supply chain sustainability programs.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Measure and benchmark internal and external leadership in sustainability using the SPLC BENCHMARK platform.
  2. Develop and apply sustainability strategies based on departmental goals, organization mission, and road-map initiatives.
  3. Discuss opportunities and facing challenges to improve sustainability programs on a national and state-wide level.
