CHARME Partners with Schneider Electric
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 9, 2025 – Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced its partnership with the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC) initiative CHARME (Collaborative for Healthcare Action to Reduce MedTech Emissions) to serve as renewable energy advisor. This partnership will execute aggregate virtual Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and long-term renewable energy solutions in the United States and globally, accelerating the healthcare sector's sustainability impact.
Innovative Partnership to Tackle Emissions
CHARME, convened by SPLC and co-chaired by Kaiser Permanente and Vizient, a healthcare performance improvement company, brings together thirty-eight health systems, medical device and equipment suppliers, distributors, Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), and other key industry stakeholders to define, implement, and champion best practices for reducing emissions from the MedTech supply chain.
Renewable energy is a key lever for emissions reduction, as described in the white paper "Catalyzing Collective Action to Decarbonize Healthcare: Roadmap for Health Systems and MedTech Suppliers," published in May 2023 with input from over 30 organizations.
Schneider Electric will leverage its expertise to guide CHARME participants to pursue innovative renewable energy strategies to meet ambitious sustainability targets. Plans for an aggregate virtual Power Purchase Agreement will begin with six early adopter health systems and MedTech suppliers – with the potential to expand. Schneider Electric has the resources and capabilities to support multiple aggregate VPPAs and grow the program’s reach globally, including throughout CHARME’s value chain.
Schneider Electric: Leading the Way in Renewable Energy
Schneider Electric, independently ranked as the #1 PPA advisor, brings unparalleled expertise in renewable energy to the CHARME initiative. Many CHARME members are already Schneider Electric clients, having experienced the company's ability to meet their unique needs and deliver successful transactions. Schneider Electric's innovative solutions, including proprietary risk mitigation measures and the IRA’s Tax Credit Transfer solution, position it as a leader in navigating the volatile PPA market. The company was awarded the 2024 RE 100 Changemaker Award for advancing renewable energy investments.
Sustainability and Responsible Renewables
“This partnership underscores the commitment of leading companies in the health sector to leverage renewable energy to drive down supply chain emissions,” said John Powers, Vice President of Global Renewable Energy and Carbon Advisory, Schneider Electric. “By addressing the unique needs of both health systems and MedTech suppliers, Schneider Electric is working together with our partners and customers toward a more resilient, sustainable future.”
"The most impactful supply chain improvements will not come through individual organizations’ efforts but will be enabled through collaborative industry partnerships – and CHARME exemplifies exactly what is possible within a sector,” said Marc Heisterkamp, Chief Executive Officer at the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council. “Accelerating the adoption of renewable energy is critical to meeting health sector emissions reductions targets, and we are excited to partner with Schneider to achieve those goals.”
