New CHARME Publications Provide Practical Steps to Strengthen Healthcare Supply Chains

News & Updates,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 20, 2026—Healthcare organizations are facing growing pressure to improve affordability, supply reliability, efficiency, and sustainability—often all at once.

The Collaborative for Healthcare Action to Reduce MedTech Emissions (CHARME) was convened by the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC), to address this challenge.

CHARME is a multi-stakeholder collaborative that brings together 40 health systems, medical device and equipment suppliers, distributors, GPOs, and industry experts and stakeholders to define, implement, and champion best practices to reduce emissions from the MedTech supply chain.

Three CHARME publications are now available for health sector leaders to put into action. The toolkits and playbooks are designed to support practical, low-risk, and high-impact strategies that lower costs, reduce waste, and strengthen healthcare supply chains without disrupting care.

“Each of these toolkits builds on two years of successful pilot projects and effective collaboration by leaders involved in CHARME. These publications share proven strategies, lessons learned, implementation guidance, and compelling results—both decarbonization strategies and cost savings,” said Cristina Indiveri, VP of Core Tenet Programs, Vizient Inc. ”We are excited to share these resources to scale supply chain resiliency and waste reduction strategies widely across the health sector.”

Transitioning to Launderable Isolation Gowns
This toolkit is designed for healthcare leaders and teams evaluating or implementing launderable isolation gowns as part of their personal protective equipment (PPE) strategy.

The guide supports organizations seeking to maintain high standards of infection prevention while reducing waste, improving supply resilience, and lowering total cost of ownership for isolation gowns.

Expanding Single-Use Device Reprocessing in Healthcare
This playbook provides step-by-step guidance, contracting strategies, stakeholder engagement tactics, and practical tools—from FAQs to program maturity assessments—to support successful expansion of single-use device reprocessing programs.

Integrating Bioplastics into Products and Packaging in Healthcare
This guide compares the carbon footprint of bioplastics, advises on recyclability and end-of-life infrastructure, and outlines levers to increase adoption of bioplastics in health care products and packaging. It equips professionals who influence product design and procurement related to plastics in healthcare to explore bioplastics as a low-carbon alternative.

Organizations in adjacent industries—such as life sciences, consumer packaged goods, electronics, and food packaging—may also use this guide to integrate bioplastics into regulated, high-performance product lines.

The CHARME publications are publicly available for free download on the SPLC Website.
